Charming Charola’s Cuisine
Located on San Pedro, in the middle of a shopping strip between Oblate and Jackson Keller, is the unassuming Charola's. I went to Charola's for a late afternoon lunch. There was a small crowd and good music playing on the sound system. I sat down and picked up the menu and noticed it was all sandwiches. But don't worry, Charola's doesn't serve your everyday, plain sandwiches - its more than that. The day I stopped in, I decided to have the Milanese. If Milanese is not done correctly, it can be tough and chewy. This one was perfect. Crispy, but not chewy. Served on a toasted bun, with onions, avocados, tomatos, and mayo. You can choose from fries, soup or salad as your side. I chose fries. They're dusted with a seasoning powder--maybe a combo of chili powder and paprika. I couldn't figure it out and they wouldn't say. But it was sure good. My friend ordered the Chipotle Roast Beef. Thinly sliced roast beef with pepper jack cheese, roasted red bell peppers, home made chipotle mayo and some spices. This was a treat like no other.
As I sat with Executive Chef Juan, he explained to me that Charola's was a great place for lunch or an early dinner, but where their star shined brightest was the large variety of "party platters" they offered. With over 30 to choose from, from sweet to savory, they have something that will suite your needs. They have your average meat and cheese and the appetizer tray of wings, meat balls and smokies. They have specialty trays like the Mediterranean and Asian. They welcome whatever challenge you can give them. But where they shine is the empanada trays. Chef Juan let me sample a few. My favorite was the beef empanada which had a crispy and flaky crust. The meat was moist, but not to wet as to make the crust soggy.
So whatever you fancy for your party, appetizers, meat, cheese, fruit, sandwiches, wraps, sea food or brownies, they have it all! Give them a call or go by. Don't forget to tell 'em ignite sent ya!
