Pop Pistol Breathes New Life Into SA’s Local Music Scene

Deep within my rhythmic cerebral lies a metronomic beat of Pop Pistol.
I first heard Pop Pistol live a couple of years ago, shortly after the time that Girl in a Coma’s success was rising. Many of San Antonio’s live music aficionados believed Pop Pistol’s talent to be comparable to GIAC’s. Can we wrap our minds around the possibility that San Antonio has a growing music scene?
At a recent Pop Pistol show, as I entered the venue I surveyed the band and zeroed in on the bar. When I observed Jorge Gonzalez on drums and George Garza slapping the bass, I noticed how poignantly acclimated and secure both musicians seemed. Alex Scheel, the lead singer, walked up slowly but confidently and took center stage. I thought to myself anxiously: “Will they blow my mind? Is their music as good as their looks?”
I slowly moved up in line for a drink, trying to get a bartenders attention.
Then the music began. And before a proclamation of voice, the lead guitar broke the silence. My mind instantly reacted to the ease and elegance of the band’s indie rock sound. The drums slowly drifted in, followed by the lead vocals. I found myself immediately inebriated with their esoteric sounds and ethereal intonations of electro-rock.
Catch a special New Year’s Eve performance featuring Pop Pistol at The Mix. Doors open at 9pm. Ages 21+ only; admission is free.
