Toscana

I recently had the honor of being invited to a soft opening for a new and fabulous Italian restaurant in downtown San Antonio. Toscana Ristorante is located on the corner of Houston and Navarro, just a block east of the Majestic Theater.
Our salad selection was a house Caesar and a caprese. Because the kitchen had run out of mozzarella, the chef prepared a new take on the traditional caprese salad: a tomato, onion and gorgonzola salad with a drizzle of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. One word: WOW! The flavor combination of the ingredients was just as good, if not better, than the usual caprese salad that we all love.
Our dinner options were salmon with gorgonzola, lasagna, and chicken marsala. I ordered the chicken marsala, which was served over fettuccini with mushrooms and a marsala wine sauce. The fettuccini was al dente and the chicken was tender, both gently tossed in the marsala sauce. The salmon was a bit on the salty side, but the chef quickly corrected it after we brought it to his attention. The salmon was flaky, flavorful, and cooked with gorgonzola on top. The lasagna was good, although I only had a bite or two. All of the dishes were served with roasted vegetables.
For dessert, we were able to choose between mixed fruit with zabaglione or cheesecake. While not currently making their own desserts, I was informed that in future they plan to do so. When they do, I’ll be the first in line to try them.
Overall, Toscana’s fare was fresh, tasty, and extremely flavorful. Service was top-notch. I want to personally thank Jack Christian for the invitation. Because this was a soft opening, there was a limited menu, so be sure to check out the follow-up I’ll write later this year.
Eat well, be well.
