Most people hear about "going green" and immediately think of recycling. While it is great to recycle, there is so much more that can be done to help further the green movement right here in San Antonio. It's a good thing to be intentionally eco-friendly. It helps us to be wise with what we have and how we use it. Plus, it's smart for your pocketbook. Here are 10 ways you can help save the planet right here, right now:

1. Switch your light bulbs to CFLs. Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs use 2/3 less energy, this means you save 2/3 on your energy bill.

2. Turn off lights when you leave a room. We've been told this for years by our parents and grandparents. I'm pretty sure there was a point.

3. Avoid turning on lights for as long as you can. We live in San Antonio and the sunlight is free! Open up your curtains. Enjoy the natural light. Your pets will thank you.

4. Turn your computer off at night. What's the point of leaving it on when it is not being used? When you do have it on, though, pay your bills online. Going paperless saves trees and it saves you time. While you are at it, unplug unused chargers and appliances. Just because it is not on does not mean that it is not using electricity.

5. Create a homemade compost bin in your backyard. This costs little to no money and helps you save on your trash bill. Fresh compost can be used in an herb garden, too. It's good to have a reminder around of where your food comes from.

6. Eat local. If you are going to make food at home, first shop at your local farmer's market. Every Wednesday evening and Saturday morning you can catch San Antonio's local Farmer's Market at the Pearl Brewery. Not big on cooking? Support local restaurants that use food derived from less than 100 miles away. Check out eatlocalchallenge.com to see just how easy this "challenge" really can be.

7. Stop using bottled water!!! It's a lie! Tap water is better and actually regulated more than bottled water companies. A better option is to buy an inexpensive reusable water bottle. All the oil that is used to produce plastic water bottles is enough to fuel one million American cars for one year!

8. Drive the speed limit. It's just smart and it saves money on gas, which is steadily getting more expensive. In fact, try to combine all of your errands for the week into one trip. An even smarter idea: walk or ride a bike to errands that are two miles or closer.

9. Don't forget to use your reusable bags!!! Don't have one? Get with the program and make one! Use an old t-shirt and head over to marthastewart.com to find a quick and easy way to repurpose that shirt in a green way.

10. Repurpose everything that you can! Glass jars make great containers for leftovers and bulk storage. Can't figure out a way to repurpose something? Post an ad on craigslist or join San Antonio Freecycle and you'll find others who can use what you no longer need. In fact these are two great places to look before you shop for something new. And while you are shopping, go to your local thrift stores to shop, donate and help support your local economy.
