Take a SA-Town Staycation!
Fiesta is over and school is out. Now is the time for the vacations to begin, but with rising fuel costs and annoying relatives, who really wants to go anywhere anyway? San Antonio has always been known as a tourist trap, but have you ever really decided to venture out for yourself and consider the option of having a staycation? The idea behind a staycation is simple: take a vacation and stay at home. The cost is little and the benefits are many: you can experience the history your city has to offer, you can visit places you have always wanted to go and you get to sleep in your own bed. Add this to the simple fact that the money that would otherwise have been spent on gas can be used to go out to eat, then your worries need be none as you don't have to do your own dishes!
During the time it takes to drive, fly or otherwise travel anywhere outside of San Antonio, one can already have visited a local destination, eaten some local fare and headed back home to watch a movie from your choice of streaming services.
San Antonio is filled with history, everyone who lives here knows we ARE the Alamo City, but sadly not everyone who lives here has taken the opportunity to visit all the missions on the Mission Trail. Hiking is a great way to spend your time on any vacation and during every vacation one takes walking is bound to happen anyway. Make it a pleasurable experience, enjoy the option of visiting the wonders that San Antonio has to offer, walk the walks of the old frontier at the other, less frequented mission sites. Besides San Antonio de Valero (aka the Alamo), Mission San Francisco de la Espada, Mission San Juan Capistrano, Mission San Jose and Mission Concepcíon respectively offer gorgeous views of the San Antonio River, frescos & art and walking tours that are sure to make you feel the beauty that nature and history has to offer.
When it comes to beauty and history in tune with nature, check out San Pedro Springs Park, San Antonio's oldest park. The park is a beautiful place to take a walk and features many tall trees that offer much needed shade. During the summer months, the man made lake serves as a (FREE!) swimming pool. There's even a public library nearby and tennis courts for the more adventurous. Another great park San Antonio has to offer is Brackenridge Park, where contained within you'll find the San Antonio Zoo, the Brackenridge Golf Course and many walking & jogging trails, public art and a rec center.
Don't want to walk? San Antonio has just unveiled its new bcycle program. This is a great program that gets everyone healthy, provides a fun bike ride and offers a better way to transport oneself throughout town. More info can be found on sanantonio.bcycle.com. Bcycle locations can be found in many places in the city and the cost is low.
After walking (or cycling if one so chooses), take the time to head out and check out the local eateries. San Antonio is known for its Mexican food and its Tex-Mex, but take the time to check out something else that is inexpensive and fun to eat in San Antonio: Frankfurters Express, Florio's Pizza, The Cove, Green Vegetarian Cuisine & Coffee and many other quality restaurants that will delight your taste buds while pleasing your pocket book. These restaurants can be found on urbanspoon.com.
When it comes to finishing off the nights right, with a staycation you can relax in your own bed or on your sofa and whether it be youtube, netflix, or hulu, enjoy what you want to see, without any flipping through hotel stations in a different city where you will inevitably complain about how you do not know about the channels. Staycations are great ways to get to know the city in which you live and better ways to get to know yourself and the one you want to be with even better.
